It’s no secret that we’re super into all things British here at Teen Vogue HQ. England boasts everything from Kate and Will to One Direction, so you can’t really blame us, right? Unfortunately we don’t get to see what goes down in Buckingham Palace too often (besides the updates on their new Instagram feed, of course), but thanks to E!’s new show, we get a little taste of what it’s like living inside a monarchy. Basically Gossip Girl, UK style.
The Royals follows a fictional British Royal family that takes love, hate, lust, and revenge to a whole different level in the network’s first scripted upcoming series. The London-set show is bound to be full of a whole bunch of drama, and let’s be honest: We’re definitelygoing to get sucked in when it premieres on March 15 at 10pm EST. Especially after meeting this cool cast.
Merritt Patterson as Ophelia
Prince Liam falls for Ophelia, the daughter of the head security for the Royals. Which definitely makes things confusing. And since she was raised in America, her independent personality and modern traditions challenges the traditions of his family when they start dating.
So, what exactly happens behind closed doors over in London’s Buckingham Palace? Well, we may never know for sure…but E! is giving us a fictional peek behind the certain at ‘The Royals‘, a family that has A LOT of issues! “It really is Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll. They are flying to France, going to clubs, doing drugs, everyone’s having sex, there is drama within the castle.”
We caught up with B.C’s own Merritt Patterson in London as she joins forces with Elizabeth Hurley to bring the rowdy royal family to life. “I think you could compare it to Gossip Girl, there are a lot of similarities, but more racy.”
Merritt plays a “commoner” who captures the heart of Queen Hurley’s son, Liam. “I playOphelia, the only American in the show. Her dad is the King’s head of security and he’s British but my mom was American. We live in the Palace with the Royal family. And the Queen is not thrilled to have a commoner in love with the Prince.”
The show, which is set to debut in March, has already been picked up for another season…which had our girl Merritt just a little ecstatic.
Fire the royal cannons! Or, you know, pop some champagne, or declutter a closet. However you like to celebrate.
E!’s richly decadent new drama series The Royals scored a second-season pickup, before it even begins airing (the show premieres March 15), and although you might not know it yet: That is fantastic news.
We chatted up Elizabeth Hurley, Joan Collins and the rest of the cast—plus the show’s creator Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill) — and here are 7 things you can get excited about regarding The Royals, the scripted series starring Hurley as the matriarch of a fictional modern-day British monarchy:
1. The Amazing Mother-Daughter-Grandmother Casting Trifecta: Not only did creator Mark Schwahn find an exciting breakout star to play Elizabeth Hurley’s daughter on the series—Alexandra Park, who is gorgeous-but-edgy, and a dead ringer for Hurley on screen—but he helped to make Hurley’s lifelong dream of playing Joan Collins’ daughter a reality. “I was thrilled!” Hurley tells me. “Because we’ve had two near misses of her playing my mom before in the past and it never panned out, and every time we meet at a party or whatever, we would always say, ‘We’re going to make it happen!’ And she said, ‘Well, you better make it soon because pretty soon you’re going to be too old to play my daughter!'” Hurley has already put in a request to catfight with Joan, being herself a diehard Dynasty fan. “We’ve been begging the writers!”
Merritt is at this exact moment at NBCUniversal’s 2015 Winter TCA Tour with The Royals co-stars! I have added the very first photos from the event to the gallery.

E! is very high on The Royals. The scripted series, the cable network’s first, has been renewed for a second season — two months before it even premieres.
Damaged, a Lifetime movie which stars Merritt aired last night on Lifetime channel. I have added to the gallery a few photos from the movie, minus screencaptures that will be uploaded as soon its possible.
